Having seen off the challenge of a top Napoli side in the groups, qualifying behind Man City, Shakhtar will be confident of getting the better of another Italian outfit on Wednesday night when they welcome Roma to their relatively new home of OSC Metalist. The Ukrainian outfit have proved that they’re very tough to face, especially on their own patch. Even a Roma side who topped a group containing both Chelsea and Atletico Madrid are likely to be in for a difficult evening.
Roma’s task in Ukraine is not an easy one, that’s for sure. As was evident during the groups, Shakhtar are very strong on home soil. For whatever reason, western European teams tend to have their issues playing in countries such as Ukraine, so the hosts have a massive advantage on Wednesday night, one that they will be keen to make pay. Backing the home side to win is hard to resist, while ‘Shahktar to Win & Both Teams to Score’ also stands out.
Having taken maximum points on home soil during the groups, Paulo Fonseca’s men will be confident of getting at a Roma side that has, at times, been somewhat shaky at the back. The hosts will play an attacking game, as they attempt to build a lead ahead of the second-leg in Rome.
Again, as was the case during the group stages, Shakhtar are an attacking team, one who will look to play on the front foot and outscore their opponents, as opposed to sitting back and trying to contain. Such tactics can indeed work in their favour against a visiting side who struggled to keep things tight when playing away from home earlier in the competition. In their own backyard, Fonseca’s men will fancy themselves to hurt the Romans; however, given that they conceded in each of their three home wins in Group F, a clean sheet might just elude them.
