Minnesota vs Iowa  Match Preview

Fifth-seeded Iowa looks to build on a successful regular season when it faces No. 12 Minnesota in the second round of the Big Ten tournament in Indianapolis on Thursday. The Hawkeyes finished with their most conference wins since 2015-16, but missed out on a double-bye after dropping a 78-76 decision to Illinois on Sunday, and they hope to bounce back by taking down the Gophers for the third straight time this season.

“Hopefully we can win and advance,” Iowa coach Fran McCaffery told reporters. “We have to go and try to win Thursday and then survive.” Minnesota put a disappointing regular season in the rearview mirror by routing Northwestern 74-57 in the first round on Wednesday. The Golden Gophers dropped eight of their last 11 games to fall out of the NCAA Tournament picture, before claiming their third win over the Wildcats this season, and they hope to stay in contention for an NIT bid by avenging a pair of losses to the Hawkeyes in 2019-20. “We just came in and prepared for Northwestern,” Minnesota forward Daniel Oturu told reporters. “We were just trying to get a win and that’s what we did.”

The Idaho State Bengals and the Montana Grizzlies will both be gunning for a victory on Thursday when they meet at CenturyLink Arena.

Oddsmakers opened the Grizzlies as -10-point favorites versus the Bengals, while the game's total opened at 141.5.

In their last action, Montana was a 85-80 loser at home against Thunderbirds. They failed to cover the -7-point spread as favorites.

Last time out for Idaho State, they were a 64-62 winner as they battled Lumberjacks on the road. They covered in the match as a +4.5-point underdog.

Iowa (#25) vs Minnesota

ABOUT MINNESOTA (15-16): Oturu scored a game-high 24 points to go along with eight rebounds and a pair of blocked shots to surpass 1,000 career points in the win against Northwestern. Marcus Carr added 14 points, five assists and five rebounds to finish in double figures for the ninth time in his last 10 games while Payton Willis tallied 12 points and six boards, as the Golden Gophers outscored the Wildcats 45-26 in the second half. The Big Ten released a statement that the rest of the tournament will be played without spectators due to the coronavirus outbreak.

ABOUT IOWA (20-11): Luka Garza was voted the Big Ten Player of the Year after averaging a conference-leading 23.9 points to go along with 9.8 rebounds while becoming the first Hawkeye player to win the award since it was introduced in 1985. “This is a dream come true for me and I want to thank my teammates and coaches,” Garza told reporters. “To win an award like this in a league like this against the quality of big men makes this a real honor.” Joe Wieskamp earned All-Big Ten Third Team honors while CJ Fredrick was selected to the Big Ten All-Freshman Team after averaging 10.2 points per game despite missing time with an ankle injury.
