Borussia Dortmund have begun the season in commanding fashion, not only by setting a Bundesliga record under a new coach (Peter Bosz) by recording clean sheets in their opening five matches, but also by establishing a five point cushion above Bayern Munich at the top of the table after just seven matches.
Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang is joint-top goalscorer in the league with eight goals, but it’s ex-Freiburg winger Maximilian Philipp who’s worth keeping an eye on for some value this weekend. He’s netted twice in each of his last two home outings.
RB Leipzig haven’t had an awful start to the season by any means, but at this point it seems evident that their first ever UEFA Champions League campaign has caused some strain on their performances and focus in the league.
Leipzig’s recent wins in “favourable fixtures” against Eintracht Frankfurt and FC Cologne were nothing to write home about, and their 2-0 defeat away to Besiktas between these has shown that the Leipzig players are struggling to perform under high pressure conditions. Star forward Timo Werner in particular complained about the noise from the fans – something that the Signal Iduna Park is renowned for.
The Red Bulls have lost to nil in all three of their “trickier” away fixtures against Schalke, the in-form Augsburg, and Besiktas, so Ralph Hasenhuttl’s side will be swimming against the current on Saturday.
Borussia Dortmund vs RB Leipzig News & Prediction
Borussia Dortmund: Peter Bosz has a ton of injuries to account for. Winger Marco Reus is out until March, right back Lukasz Piszczek is out until November, and left back Marcel Schmelzer is out until later this month. Not much is known about the injuries to midfielders Nuri Sahin, Mahmoud Dahoud, and Sebastian Rode, while goalkeeper Roman Burki, winger Andre Schurrle, and Raphael Guerreiro are all either day to day or back in training. Erik Durm is also one of those players.
RB Leipzig: Ralph Hasenhuttl has seen striker Timo Werner return to training this week, and his inclusion would be a huge boost for his team. Defensive midfielder Stefan Ilsanker and right winger Marcel Sabitzer look set to miss out. Diego Demme and Fabio Coltorti could play a role if needed.
